The underlying soaring ambition is the biggest parallel drawn between the two, which is the ultimate reason for Victor's demise. It is foreshadowed in the fourth letter that Victor suffers a terrible defeat in his efforts to achieve some great purpose and that Walton could suffer the same fate should his ambition get the best of him. This parallel made by Victor in letter four conveys a storyline for the remainder of the novel as the readers are intrigued to see the underlying similarities and ultimate tragic flaw. How foreshadowing is conveyed through references to fate. Throughout the novel, Victor narrates in past tense, claiming he was once young and bright until his ambition led him elsewhere and his fate already became decided, foreshadowing his tragic demise. Victor describes all human beings as either bound to prosperity or ruin and that fate will decide the future; this conveys foreshadowing to Victor's ruin compared to Walton's prosperity. The use of the word destiny conveys meaning to the supernatural and how Victor is foreshadowing his tragic ending due to fate. Victor, in this quote, is using fate as a way of indicating consequential things to come and also as an excuse for his tragic flaw. The significance of past tense in regards to foreshadowing. The use of past tense in narratives when speaking from later part in the narrators life adds to the tension and indication of foreshadowing. It is critical in foreshadowing. Although Victor is speaking from a later part of his life, he still insinuates tragic events to come when he claims his fate has always been decided. The word prophetic adds to the theme of the supernatural and how it has impacted Victor's life and experiences. This proves that Victor believes his fate has been predetermined and there is nothing he can do to relinquish himself from the consequences. Also, the indication of the word first adds an element of foreshadowing more deaths to come. Fate vs free will. The use of foreshadowing through supernatural conveys meaning to the theme of fate vs free will. Victor believes that his fate has been decided for him however with the creation of his monster and his actions soon following, he was ultimately the master of his own fate.
